OPERATION
HOUR 1
"If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?"
James 2:16
GIVE YOUR FIRST HOUR
OPERATION H1 IS AN ANNUAL MISSION TRIP FOR JR. HIGH STUDENTS THAT CHALLENGES THEM TO GIVE THE LAST HOURS OF THE OLD YEAR AND FIRST HOURS OF THE NEW YEAR TO GOD.
WHAT WE DO
Every New Year's Eve, people gather on Colorado Blvd. to save their place for the next morning's Rose Parade. An atmosphere of celebration grows as more friends and families arrive. Vendors can be found walking up and down the sidewalk and resturants are packed to the brim. With evening, the party only grows. Anticipation for the new year builds and cheers, laughter, and joy can be heard all around. Then comes the count down. Never all together, but always in the same spirit. Five! Four! Seven! Six! Nine! Eight! Two! One! Happy New Year! Then off to bed as the cold and quiet sets in. Rest before dawn, when more people will arrive and, afer them, the floats.
Operation Hour 1 sees this celebration as an opprotunity to show God's love. Just after midnight, we walk the tired streets of Colorado Blvd. with igloos of hot chocolate and offer the perfectly warm and wonderfully delicious drink to those buddled up along the street. We do not charge and will not accept donations, but instead hand out over 1,000 free cups of cocoa to anyone who asks. Each cup handed out has a hand written message on it penned by the Jr. High students theselves the day before. They are messages of love, encouragement, and the wonder of God. We walk in testiment to James 2:16, "If one of you says to them, 'Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,' but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?"
In addition to this experience of self-sacrifice, with Operation Hour 1, students encounter lessons in teamwork, leadership, evangelics and more. From 7:00 am on December 31st until almost 3:00pm on January 1st, they are lead through over twelve different "journeys" that aim to teach valuable skills and idea. One such journey teaches apologetics through debates between the Jr. High students and their veteran High School leaders. It is an exciting and energy filled activity that they walk away from fellowship and knowledge. Another "journey", only recently added, is the taking of communion only minutes after we've hareld in the new year. Students are encouraged to reflect and medidate during this time, as the prepare to dedicate the year in both spirit and action to the Lord.
Operation Hour 1 is a growing mission lead by God's will and direction. It has evolved over the years, with activites coming and going, but always the trip remains focused on the Lord. It is a challenging and fulfilling opportunity for any Jr. Higher who is seeking God's heart and want to stretch themselves.
